Busy highways where motorists travel at high speeds can be extremely dangerous. On these roads, contact between two vehicles sometimes triggers a chain reaction that affects many others. The danger is magnified when an accident includes a tractor-trailer or another type of truck that is carrying heavy cargo.
When a Toyota Camry hit an 18-wheeler on the Northwest Freeway (Highway 290) near West Road, it set off a series of collisions that ended up involving nine different vehicles. Police were not immediately aware of what led the Toyota to collide with the large truck’s steer axle while both were traveling westbound. This impact forced the 18-wheeler to careen out of control and onto the barrier separating the eastbound from westbound lanes. The trailer swung into the left-most eastbound lane where it was struck by an oncoming car, whose force caused bricks being carried in the trailer to spill onto the road.
Two women trapped inside the Toyota required urgent medical treatment, with one being transported to a nearby hospital via helicopter. Officials reported that one victim suffered a brain bleed and fractured spine, while the other had a broken leg and a spinal fracture. It took more than seven hours to remove the vehicles and bricks so that normal freeway traffic could resume. A hazardous material cleanup crew also reported to the scene.
Litigation stemming from truck accidents such as this one can be complex and contentious. With nine vehicles suffering some form of damage, it could be quite difficult to determine exactly who is at fault for what. Along with driver negligence, there might also be questions about whether the truck was overloaded or improperly secured, causing the bricks to fall onto the highway.
