Most of the time, drivers who operate their vehicles safely can avoid serious accidents. Tragically, there are certain situations where someone else on the road is driving so dangerously that even the most careful motorist is unable to avoid a catastrophic collision. One example of this is when a vehicle is traveling at high speed in the wrong direction.
A devastating four-vehicle crash on I-45 North near Crosstimbers Street left one man dead and triggered an investigation into the woman who apparently caused the accident. Monica Valdez was operating a Ford F-150 pickup after three in the morning, apparently over the speed limit and on the wrong side of the highway. Her truck ran into a Jeep driven by Steve Nartey, who died at the scene.
Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous types of accidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities due to the high speeds and head-on collisions involved. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), wrong-way driving accidents account for a small percentage of overall crashes but are disproportionately deadly. Factors that contribute to these types of crashes include impaired driving, speeding and driver inattention.
Witnesses say that the vehicle driven by Valdez was heading southbound on I-45 North for as many as 10 or 15 minutes. Following the collision, she screamed that she needed help to leave the scene. This might be due to the fact that she was out on bond in advance of a drug conspiracy trial in Brazos County. In addition to the collision with the Jeep, another car was hit by Valdez and a fourth vehicle was struck by debris from the accident.
For those affected by fatal car and truck accidents, the legal system provides avenues to seek a measure of justice and accountability. Families of victims may pursue wrongful death claims to hold negligent parties responsible and to recover compensation for the harm they’ve endured, including funeral expenses, lost income and emotional suffering.
This incident also highlights the importance of addressing systemic issues, such as monitoring individuals awaiting trial for serious offenses and implementing measures to prevent wrong-way driving. Enhanced roadway signage, improved lighting and wrong-way detection systems are just a few strategies that can help reduce the likelihood of such crashes.
