In many Texas cities, there is visible evidence that authorities are trying to encourage bicycle use by making roads less dangerous for riders. Along with bike lanes and paths, some municipalities have established ordinances aimed at protecting cyclists. One example is the Houston rule setting forth that car and trucks must remain at least three feet away from a bicycle that they’re passing.

Despite these efforts, Texas remains one of the most dangerous states in the country for cyclists. Even the Houston area has not been able to record sustained improvement in bicycle safety. Though deaths dropped in 2024, the prior year was the worst since 2016, with 26 cyclist fatalities on Harris County roads. Overall, there were 670 crashes and 561 injuries reported.

Houston’s network of bike trails and designated bike lanes should foster a safer atmosphere, but these routes often lack connectivity, frequently funneling cyclists onto regular roads where they must share space with vehicular traffic. Unfortunately, the three-foot rule is not consistently observed, exacerbating the risks faced by those on two wheels. The aggressive and inattentive driving habits of some motorists can lead to catastrophic outcomes for cyclists left with minimal protection.

Reducing the number of injures stemming from bicycle accidents requires a multi-faceted approach. Expanding and interconnecting designated bike paths would provide cyclists with a safer, traffic-free environment. Additionally, robust enforcement of traffic laws designed to protect cyclists and public education campaigns can also make a difference.

Based on the 2023 statistics, more than half of bicycle crashes were caused by motor vehicles. Common factors in these incidents were speeding, driver distractions and failing to yield the right of way. If you or someone in your family was hurt or killed by a careless motorist, compensation for medical expenses, lost income and other harm stemming from the accident might be available.
